8 Ways to Make Your E-Commerce Images Stand Out & Increase Sales

With today’s technology, photos can be captured on anyone’s smartphone. But photography is more than simply pointing a lens at an object and pressing a button. Good planning and forethought by photographers and editors can capture professional-level images that make products stand out to increase sales.

Lighting

Lighting is one of the most important aspects in photography. Proper lighting can accurately depict colors and texture of objects. When it comes to e-commerce photography, customers need to have the most accurate representation of the products. When products images are too bright or too dark, shoppers will likely not consider buying it altogether. Improper lighting may even discredit your company as second-rate. Distorted colors, brightness/darkness, and large shadows are a hindrance in the realm of product photography, so it is best to give the most accurate representation of a product.

Provide Various Angles

Providing multiple angles of a product for shoppers to view is essential to make your images stand out. Shoppers most likely have not physically seen a product they are shopping for online. When given various angles, they will be able to get a very accurate idea of the product’s size and tangibility. Multiple angles of the same product give shoppers more visual information and a better informed shopper will make better purchase decisions.

360 Degree Viewing Options

A full 360 degree view can be one of the most effective techniques in e-Commerce. 360 degree product photography can give the shopper control of whichever angle they want to see – as opposed to the angles that you provide them. Many retailers provide multiple angles of a product as well as a 360 degree option to toggle. Check out more information about 360 product photography here.

Consistent Placement/Positioning

There are many instances where products in the same category are different but benefit from being placed in a consistent position. In this example, there are various types of light bulbs that Sylvania sells, but consistently placing the light bulb in front of their boxes in these beauty views is a deliberate decision. This creates a sense of uniformity and professionalism. In the example below, three different light bulbs in different packaging are placed in the same manner. It doesn’t matter if it is a peg or a box. The bulbs are placed in-front of their respective packaging to give the shopper a better look at what they look like. The placements of the bulbs provides a sense of consistency.

Provide Assortments of the Same Product

There are many instances where products have different versions for the same UPC. When such products have various versions, it is important to provide images of the different assortments. Perhaps an item under the same UPC is offered in different colors/designs.

UPC – Universal Product Code

Instead of showcasing one color, you can provide images for all colors. It could be the difference between shoppers making a purchasing decision versus looking elsewhere for the same product in the desired color or design.

Showcase the Product

When it comes to product images, there are instances where it is not enough to simply have the product sitting flat on a surface.  For example, items that are meant to be worn benefit from using platforms such as stands and mannequins to showcase them. The watch pillow below emulates the appearance of the watch around someone’s wrist. The use of props can give shoppers a better idea of what they look like when they are worn or used. This simple representation can positively affect buyer decisions.

Ability to Zoom

The ability to zoom has been a well established feature on retail websites for a while. Despite its availability across many company websites, some may not have the high resolution images that make the zoom ability so effective.  Ensuring that the product images on your website are high resolution is essential to properly present the fine details of the product in a beneficial manner. A better customer experience and a more informed customer have a significant influence on increasing sales.

Accurate Product Descriptions

Product information has the obvious purpose of providing information. As mentioned before, images provide visual information for customers. Product descriptions that are consistent with its images play an important role in purchasing decisions. Frequently, products have images but little to no descriptive information such as dimensions, weight, or item count. These descriptions can get a customer from the consideration stage to the purchasing stage.

If products don’t look good and presentable, shoppers won’t be inclined to make purchases. These examples above are only a few techniques that can make your E-commerce listings stand out.
